Rui Costa – Golden Generation

Posted under current soccer

Rui Manuel César Costa, OIH (born 29 March 1972) is a former Portuguese football player and current Director of Football for Sport Lisboa e Benfica. An attacking midfielder also capable of playing as a deep-seated defensive midfielder, he most recently played for Portuguese club Benfica. Renowned for his fine technique and his excellent passing, he’s now considered as one of the greatest midfielders of his generation. In 2004, he was named by Pelé in FIFA 100, as one of the 125 greatest living football players.

At the end of his third season in Benfica’s senior squad, Fiorentina offered 1200 million escudos (about €6 million) for the young midfielder, an impressive fee at the time. Since Benfica was struggling with financial problems, Rui Costa had to leave.

Despite the heavy competition with the best midfielders in that time such as Zinedine Zidane, Costa was named the best number 10 player in the Serie A a few times. His departure from Fiorentina was discussed every season, since many clubs constantly showed interest in signing him. However, he only left when Fiorentina went bankrupt after the 2001-02 season.

Fatih Terim was the coach of Fiorentina in the 2000-01 season. When he was leaving Fiorentina for Milan, he took Costa with him, paying a reported £30 million for the player. In doing so, Costa became Milan’s most expensive transfer of all-time. Costa played five seasons in Milan, where he won one Serie A title, one Italian Cup, one Italian Super Cup, one UEFA Champions League, and one European Super Cup.

In 2003, Brazilian youngster Kaká joined the ranks at Milan and relegated Costa to the bench. Though pleased with Kaká’s success, he was disappointed to be restricted to the bench in the twilight of his career.

In 2004, Costa played his last match for the Portuguese squad at the UEFA Euro 2004 final, when Portugal lost to underdogs Greece 1-0 in what was considered a titanic upset.

On 25 May 2006, Costa’s return to Benfica to play for the forthcoming season was announced in a press conference. He had been released from Milan after both the player and the club reached an agreement to end his contract. Costa also gave up his €4.6 million per year contract to play in the club that, year after year, had dreamt of his return. Costa’s affection for Benfica is publicly known and so is his desire to end his career at the Portuguese club. On 11 May 2008, Costa played his last game for Benfica against Vitória de Setúbal before announcing his retirement from football.

On the following day, Costa was presented as the new leader of the football department, hiring Quique Sánchez Flores as the new manager of Benfica and being responsible for the formation of the team in the next season.

During the 2008 Summer transfer window, Costa was able — already as Director of Football — to sign a few well-known players, such as Argentine playmaker Pablo Aimar and bringing in Spanish left-winger José Antonio Reyes and Honduran striker David Suazo in on loan, thus gaining general praise from both board and fans alike.

On the following Summer, Costa further increased his efforts to build a solid Benfica team, with such signings as Argentinean striker Javier Saviola, Brazilian centre midfielder Ramires and Spanish defensive midfielder Javi García, along with experienced Portuguese manager Jorge Jesus. This effort was rewarded with Benfica’s victory in the Portuguese League.

The Palestinian National Football Team

Posted under current soccer

http://footballpalestine.blogspot.com

The Palestine Football Association was established in 1928 and has the honor of being one of the oldest Asian FAs.Due to the conflict in the region,it ceased participation in FIFA events and wasn’t re-affiliated until 1998.In 1999,Palestine took part in the Pan Arab Cup in Jordan and finished 3rd after wins against the UAE and Qatar and draws against Libya and Syria.
In 2002,a Chilean with Palestinian origins by the name of Nicola Shahwan with the help of the Palestine FA started recruiting Chilean-Palestinians who were eligible to play for Palestine. He took the job as head coach and led Palestine in the 2002 Pan Arab Cup in Kuwait. This Palestinian team was unique in that it had a South American touch to it as 5 starters were Chilean born. This is where my video picks up.
Palestine recorded impressive results with a 1-1 tie vs Jordan(First goal shown in vid) and a 3-3 tie against home side Kuwait(next goal shown in vid).
Next in 2004 came the World Cup Qualifiers for Germany 2006.Palestine started off strongly with an 8-0 win over Chinese Taipei. They also tied 1-1 with Iraq courtesy of Roberto Kettlun’s brilliant free kick but two defeats from Uzbekistan crushed the teams World Cup hopes.
In 2006 came the qualifiers for the 2007 Asian Cup.Palestine was grouped with Singapore,Iraq and China.Palestine defeated recent South East Asian champions Singapore 1-0(goal shown in vid) and tied Iraq(who would go on to win the Asian Cup) 2-2 but lost twice to China.
In April 2006,Palestine took part in the AFC Challenge Cup where they defeated Guam 11-0,won Cambodia 4-0 and tied with Bangladesh 1-1 before they lost in the Semi-Final to Kyrgystan.
The Palestinian National Team takes part in international competition despite all the difficulties.Current players play with clubs in Palestine, the Arab World,North America,South America and Europe.

NEW – Iraqi Football Team Compilation Asian Cup 2011

TEHRAN — Iran coach Afshin Ghotbi said on Wednesday that he hopes to pilot his side to glory in the 2011 Asian Cup finals and what would be a first title in 35 years.
The draw in the Asian Cup 2011 to be played in Qatar from January 7 to 29 groups Iran, the Asian powerhouse from the late 1960s through the 1970s, with current Asian Cup champions Iraq, North Korea and the United Arab Emirates.
“We are there for victory, we are trekking on this path and we will act professionally. Our aim is the championship but I am not promising anything,” Ghotbi told a Tehran press conference, his last as coach of Team Melli.
“Now all Iranians have to keep the tempo in backing the team… it is their children playing for glory… to achieve the title after more than three decades,” he said.
Ghotbi, who will part with Team Melli after the Qatar finals, said that he has planned a 10-day training camp in the host nation, with whom Iran will play a pre-tournament friendly on December 28. A second has been pencilled in against Angola on January 2.
“I have assembled a team based on the players’ being football-smart, team-minded, and having an instinctive ambition for the title,” Ghotbi said, when asked why some recent caps had failed to make the squad.
However, both Javad Nekounam and Masoud Shojai of Spanish La Liga club Osasuna have made the shortlist.
Iran’s opening game in Qatar will be against holders Iraq on January 11.

Iran has a current FIFA ranking of 66, which puts it behind Japan, South Korea and Australia. The country won the Asian Cup in 1968, 1972 and 1976, and hosted the continent’s biggest football event in 1968 and 1976.
